Jack Barnstone is an outside-the-box, motorcycle-riding physician who, finding himself in two kinds of trouble, leaves Texas to start a solo practice near Chinatown in San Francisco. When a patient walks in his office with an undiagnosed mortal illness Barnstone's life changes forever. Finding himself in deeper trouble than ever he must work his way through a malpractice suit, the mistrust of his colleagues and the suspicions of the San Francisco police in order to vindicate himself. Since he has arrived in San Francisco just at the start of the Summer of Love to pursue his quest he has to learn the inner workings of Hippie culture, the sinister workings of the Satanic Church while he is dodging the unpredictable actions of the San Francisco Police. With help from his new Hippie girlfriend and an old flagrantly gay East Indian assistant coroner he discovers why the case was so difficult to solve, confronts the perpetrator and stumbles upon a well-hidden and sinister web of criminal activity.

The Lucifer Connection David Watts 9780996482110 Books Reviews
Excellently written. Locking forward to the sequel!
It was good to visit the sights and sounds of San Francisco in 1967. It is great if you were there and informative if you were not.
A great read for mystery lovers and fans of San Francisco, past and present. Well-developed characters and relationships. the author's first-hand medical knowledge is a big plus
This thriller really moves...I was hooked from chapter 2... and picks up speed from there. Though I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years, it wasn't until I read this book that I felt like I had a real feel for the 1960s culture here... David Watts is a wonderful and engaging storyteller...highly recommend!
Watts maintains his white-knuckled grip on concise language that has been present since his first publication. His characters practically sat in the room with me as I read, so real did each of them seem with their first introductions. The story kept my attention on several levels - Jack Barnstone's life actually becomes more suspenseful (professionally and romantically) after a geographical attempt to escape entanglements from his past. This is a quick read, but only because it keeps you wanting to read just one more chapter ... then just one more ... which meant I lost plenty of sleep trying to figure out what was going to happen next!
I fell in love with these characters, and with the beautifully chiseled body of this story of mystery and suspense sculpted with pure authenticity. David Watts brings the 1960s, San Francisco, and the Summer of Love to life as the backdrop for this engaging story that is so expertly crafted it pulls you in and keeps you wanting more. Watts' brilliant writing draws you into an era, and puts you front and center in the life of the charming bohemian doctor, Jack Barnstone, as his medical practice becomes entwined with murder and he soon has to save more than his practice, and even more than his life. Watts' characters are each so uniquely individual and so perfectly woven into the story that they effortlessly pick you up and carry you along, taking you deeper into their culture and their own lives as they work with, or against, Barnstone. Watts gives you everything you could want in a great book - a compelling story full of interesting people set in a time and place that comes to life so fully that you feel like you are there. A page-turner. Engrossing. Engaging. Curl up with this book at bedtime, at the beach, on the train, on a lazy afternoon, on a sunny day or a stormy day, at the coffee shop or at lunch. Read it for your bookclub. Give it as a gift. Anyway you read it, this is a good way to spend time with a great story whose characters will have you wanting more. (I would love to see this become a series!) Beautifully crafted and expertly written, this book is a great read! I highly recommend it!
I loved this book! It’s fast-paced, scary-funny-sexy, with unforgettable characters. Very visual and visceral. Reminds me of a classic Hollywood movie.
The main character, Jack Barnstone, is one part Dr. Kildaire, one part Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, and one part Jack Nicholson of Chinatown fame. Instead of being in dubious possession of a Maltese Falcon, our hero, a physician, finds himself stuck with a patient who dies mysteriously after a routine office visit. The San Francisco police, the coroner’s office, and the crime syndicate are hell-bent on pinning the rap on Barnstone suing him for malpractice; terminating his medical license; and, while they’re at it, terminating his life. Enter Faye Dunaway—or Mary Astor?—as the mysterious, gorgeous, seductive wife of the strangely deceased shipping magnate. It’s not clear whose side she’s on. Lots of other shady characters running in and out of the action—lots of Peter Lorre’s basically. Again, it’s hard to tell whom, if anyone, to trust. Oh, and there’s some New Orleans voodoo and a Satanic cult. White magic and black magic. Shades of Charles Manson and Helter Skelter.
For all his brashness and bravado, our hero wakes up and finds himself in a tight squeeze, a very tight squeeze. Who can save him? Perhaps his pathologist friend Raj, who risks his career and his life to gather evidence, at the morgue, in the middle of the night. Or perhaps The Hippie Chick who . . . I don’t want to spoil the ending. Let’s just say she has a skill set that reminds me of Lauren Bacall in “To Have and Have Not.” Except that it’s set in San Francisco’s Chinatown. And Haight-Ashbury. During the Summer of Love. Fortune Cookies anyone?
