i must admit that i downloaded the kindle version of this book when it came across my screen as a free offer on amazon.in. i'd been in india for approximately two months and had just joined a fitness gym - i was looking for light reading while on the treadmills... this book delivered.

Wise Enough to Be Foolish is a quick read - i spend about an hour on the exercise machines at the gym and within one week i was done reading it. the first chapter pulled me in - in a soap-opera sort of way - i took the bait the author dangled within the first few pages and knew i'd have to read the rest of the chapters in order to learn what happened. the main character pulled me in in those first few pages enough for me to want to find out.

i liked that it was a light story, based on the author's life events, which seemed atypical of the majority of young indian women of her time. right away, i understood that this woman was privileged and had access to opportunities that many do not. despite her family being somewhat traditional and rigid in their views, she still managed to utilize their socioeconomic standing to her own advantage and did so relatively unhindered and unscathed.

so, this is a glimpse of a young, privileged woman's life in india. if that aspect bothers you, find another book. if you can accept it for what it is - it's selling so inexpensively on amazon right now, you might as well snatch it up.

as an american from the united states currently living in india - i found the book to be an interesting reflection of something i continue to see in today's indian culture - the strange place in which young women find themselves in between traditional family values (many rooted in patriarchy) and western/global influences... on everything from sports, dating, education, travel and marriage.

i enjoyed reading about her life; it's not phenomenal or jaw-dropping, but she gets around and manages to involve herself in some interesting pursuits... some of which go against the grain of expectations for a young indian woman. i do wish that some of the characters (actual people in her life events) received more attention and depth. i also don't really feel like the author exposed her self as much as some of the other reviewers stated here. i felt like everyone's gritty details, feelings and thoughts (good and bad), were kept at a safe and appropriate distance. i learned some things about the author and those she crossed paths with, but not enough to feel like i got past their surface.

all in all - it's a sweet and touching story of how she found love and dealt with the norms of her culture balanced against her desire to get what she wanted out of life.

Wise Enough to Be Foolish Gauri Jayaram 9788184954562 Books Reviews

This book gives insight in to the life of a delinquent daughter. It also tells us how parents who have more than one child might find satisfaction that one or other will listen to them and make them happy in later years. The customs and traditions of the parents would be rejected by one and respected by another. A daughter who turns out to be foolish by rejecting parents' control, in spite of being wise, could end up suffering more than the one that is wise and listens to the advice of one's parents. Written beautifully and easy to figure out every situation. Also tells us how women's liberation has created difficult situations for the adolescent and young adult girls. This book might reveal how a girl should avoid getting trapped by acting foolishly to claim liberty as an equal to the boys.
I recently lived Ms.Gauri Jayaram’s life through her debut novel ‘Wise Enough to be Foolish’ and when I say that I am still reeling from the hangover of it, I mean that as a compliment.

A partly fictionalised memoir (done so to protect the identity of couple of characters), this book basically tells us about the life and choices of a woman in our ‘developing’ nation. The novel traces the journey of the author as child in an army family to a rebellious and attention seeking teenager to an extrovert college goer to a mature woman finding her soul mate. She touches upon various aspects of her life… From the nomad lifestyle of army personnel to the influence of a good teacher in one’s life to the independence and unwanted attention during her college and hostel life – everything is reflected as it is in real life. The trials, the mistakes made, the choices and forks in life that are portrayed in this book are all something that each of us can relate to. She has expertly outlined the issues and the reaction of our society to them by bringing up her experiences with parental expectations, sex discrimination, inter-caste marriage, divorce, eve-teasing and stereotyping.

It was such an elevating experience to be able to read about a strong willed, independent woman who made so many unconventional (as some would say) choices and taking on each and every challenge head-on. She clearly has showed us by example that it is possible to thrive and be happy without bowing down to the societal pressure – that it is okay to want to live life by your own rules without sparing a thought to general norms of our society. It is okay if you do not agree with Gauri in each step of her life, as long as you realise that you always have a choice – either to bow down to norms and pressure or curve out a path for yourself.

This book turned out to be highly inspiring and motivating without making it a drag to read. I would recommend every woman to pick this book up because it has something that we can all identify with – our reality!
